Chapter 13- Jesus: Politician?

Jesus wanted Israel to be free from the Romans, the Zealots, Pharisees, and Essenes. So some may say that he was heavily involved in politics. However, in 1st century Judea, there really was no distinction between religion and politics. Everything was "thought of in terms of God and the law."
The way Jesus saw it the base of all of humanity's downfall is a lack of compassion. Even if the Romans were overthrown, the Jews would rule their own people the same way because of all the exploitation within. It wasn't just the Romans, it was every class in 1st century Judea who was oppressing the other, and for that, Jesus said that a change in every aspect of life was in order.

  1. Like Carly desrcibes "Jesus saw it the base of all humanity's downfall is lack of compassion." Well this relates to the passage of John The Feeding of 5000. Jesus was able to teach the people in the crowd on that day to love one another and share what is yours in order to help others. It proved that miracles could be found if each man put just a little faith in the person next to them. By showing compassion to one another the world becomes a much stronger and loving place. In the story told by John the people didn't oppress the others they looked at each other as brothers and sisters just as Jesus had taught them.

  2. It seems like back then it was a "monkey see monkey do" society.Jesus wasn't blinded by the lack of compassion that was present at the time. Compassion changes the way that people think and view things. It is like the golden rule "do unto others as you would want to be done unto you". If society practiced this idea then the world would be a better place

  3. Compassion is defined as a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. If people of Jesus's time had practiced compassion then Jesus would not have been sent to forgive the sins of those who chose to hurt themselves and others. To understand others and help those in need is what Jesus preached about during his life on Earth. John wrote about Jesus's teachings and compassion was a main point Jesus made to his followers, those that believed in him, and even to the non-believer. If we follow God's word spoken through Jesus we can find the Kingdom of Heaven.

  4. I think that back then, religion was their way of politics. Many things were governed according to the religion that was in power at that time. I think that people were very much associated by what class or rank you were in society and based upon that, that was how you were treated. Jesus came at a time in history where change was not really accepted and it was looked at like a way of rebellion. When Jesus would go and perform his miracles, like the curing of the paralytic, He was looked at as rebel. I think Jesus strived for compassion. Like Kelly said, I think compassion was needed to be practiced in order for people to fully understand what Jesus' was trying to do. It was not fully reached because the political party did not agree with it.
